It’s that time of year again, and all over the world MPA students, new and old, are getting ready to make the long journey toAmritsar.  This year we will have students from sixteen different countries: Australia, New Zealand, Thailand, Singapore, Japan, India, Germany, Spain, Netherlands, UK, Canada, Trinidad and Tobago, Brazil, Ecuador, Mexico, and the USA.  We are looking forward to welcoming the largest group of new students in the history of our school!  It is going to be an amazing year.

As the students get ready, we want to remind parents to read some tips for Preparing Your Child for Miri Piri Academy.  We also asked our veteran students to offer some recommendations to their new brothers and sisters as they do their final packing.  They suggest that you dont forget to pack:

• A camera to record and share memories with family and friends.
• A cozy quilt and sheets to make the dorm feel like home.
• Pictures of family and friends for the wall and bedside table.
• Board games, footballs, cleats, basketball shoes, skateboards or anything else you like to do for fun.
• Your iPod and headphones!!

Seventeen years ago, on the 7^th of September, I became the mother of my oldest son, Arturo Wallace. From that moment in time, a great deal of my energy, in one way or another has been directed toward raising him and his younger brother, Diego. Like many mothers in my generation, I read up on every subject possible to help make the right decisions and send them walking down the right path.  When it was time for them to enter school, I felt like I had found the best for them both; a place at the very school where I have been employed as an English teacher most of their lives.  However, from the get go I began to witness a split reality; one very flat reality existing on a mediocre report card while in the same space in time, I was able to enjoy watching their great success in all the other parts of themselves as human beings, reflected in the areas of arts, sports, friendship, loyalty, integrity, honesty, and nobility, and that are sadly enough, not graded with any real serious commitment on the part of our educational system. At the end of the day, they are classified with numbers and labeled mediocre; while the reality is just the opposite!

Over the years I have really struggled with the idea of understanding, and then accepting, that the kind of education being offered is just so incredibly limiting and at times meaningless, due to its mostly exclusive focus on the mental capacities of memorization in where the child is asked to sit down, pay attention and memorize; in turn reducing the child to a tiny and rather poor cousin of the human being, that has by birthright, the gift of splendid and multiple intelligences.

And the rest of this child? Where is he? Can anyone see him, hear him, or feel him?

Preparing to go to India next month has been less a series of events and more like an organic manifestation of the spiritual makeup of me and my son, Arturo. With the help of The Divine Guide Within which has  lead me to all of my personal interests and studies in education and spiritual growth inside of the teachings of Kundalini Yoga, I was presented with this very important opportunity to enroll my oldest son in The Siri Singh Sahib`s spiritual and educational academy in Amritsar.

For us, it simply feels right, a perfect fit, and an example of something that makes sense on all levels; a good feeling in the gut and a song in the heart. As a mother, I am filled with an overwhelming sense of pride and accomplishment as I watch with gratitude this reality falling into place with order and grace. On the part of my son Arturo, funny enough as it may seem, he is enjoying a bit of super stardom in his high school and neighborhood.  Mostly, there is a lot a male energy circulating around their strong attraction to hair, turban, swords, musical instruments and the ever growing lure of yoga. My house is full of teenagers, boys and girls, staring at him in disbelief, with eyes wide open and a million questions! I don’t know about your neighborhood, and city, but in ours, yoga has become something cool and fairly sought after! And of course, I can only enjoy this so deeply, because as a mother and an educator, I have seen so many teenagers fall through the cracks due to the lack of effective and nurturing educational, family and spiritual culture. And as we all know well, when the pain hits, the vast majority of humans, young and old, just begin to flounder in the sea of turmoil and confusion and lose our ways for minutes, hours, days and sometimes a lifetime.

How fortunate to have this early opportunity to live and learn a spiritual strength to help navigate through this life, come what may!

As the school year begins, the enrollment season is coming to an end.  This year we have the highest number of new students

joining the school than ever before.  With word about the school and the teachings of Yogi Bhajan spreading rapidly all over the world, our student body has become increasingly diverse.  With that diversity, however, also comes the need for a substantial increase in our Financial Aid Fund.  This year more than 66% of our student body is depending on Financial Aid to make their journey possible, and we in turn are depending on our parents, alumni, friends and supporters to contribute to the Financial Aid fund that supports them.

This year our fundraising goal for the Financial Aid fund is $250,000. We kicked off our fundraising this year with a Silent Auction at Summer Solstice in New Mexico, and raised $10,000 in one week there.  Since then we have been calling on our long time supporters and donors, and through your generosity another $35,000 was raised.  By Guru’s grace, at the start of the school year we are well on our way towards our goal!

It is our hope that each and every parent, alumni and friend of the school will sign up for monthly donations by credit card or electronic bank transfer by the end of this year. Whether $108 or $15 per month, all donations, large and small, make a difference to our students and make our Financial Aid program possible!

Our goal of raising $250,000 is very doable. Our goal can be reached with just:
1400 people donating $15 per month ($252,000)
700 people donating $30 per month ($252,000)
400 people donating $54 per month ($259,200)
200 people donating $108 per month ($259,000)
25 people donating $10,000 ($250,000)

Ultimately it is our goal to enroll anyone who wants to attend, regardless of their ability to pay.  Your contribution will help us reach that goal! We just found a great online photogallery and Rajveer Singh and Kawalpal Singh of Sikh Sewaks Singapore, the camp organizers, sent us their report.

“Waheguru ji ka Khalsa,Waheguru ji ke Fateh. Greetings in the name of God, the Light of every Soul and in the name of Guru, the

life of every Sikh. By the Grace of God and Blessing of Guru Hargobind Ji, master of Miri and Piri ,we truly believe and had the experience that this was the best Camp Miri Piri we had in Singapore since its birth in 2004.

Camp Miri Piri Asia 2010 from June the 8th to the 13th actually held in Johore Bahru at Gurtaj Camp Site, was deeply powerful, meditative and experiential in every way. World renowned Cherdi Kala Jetha from Espanola and ambassadors of Miri Piri Academy in Amritsar, the potent Shanti Kaur Khalsa,the lion Gurutej Singh Khalsa, the honourable Dr Jasbir Singh known as Scotland and the joyful Dharamjot Kaur Khalsa from Melbourne taught, taught, taught, inspired and really reached out to the 140 participants.

Morning 5 banis started at 4 a.m sharp which ended with Guru’s Hukamnama at about 5.15 a.m. and then about 40 mins of yoga and stretching followed by Simran and Meditation till 6:30AM. This time the morning practice was really strong and we felt the camp was done by the end of the morning!

Oh yes we also had Harimandir Singh Khalsa, a Miri Piri Academy alumni from Espanola, who did the pre-camp work with the set-up team and led energizing physical training in the Morning at 7 a.m. on the dirt field. Harimandir Singh made the participants march. No one was allowed to cheat.  If someone did, every young man and women had to do push-ups! For the first time everyone loved the tough PT sessions.

After that breakfast and one and half hours of rest and showers and then straight to Body,Mind and Soul Sessions filled with exercise, Kundalini Yoga, and deep meditations on Shabad Guru. Cherdi Kala Jetha would lead the guys and Shanti and Dharamjot Kaur, the ladies.  There was straight talk about issues each gender had, their challenges were discussed openly

with out boundary as the Camp was for 13 and above. The talks were open, inspiring and the participants this time had deep thought provoking questions. They were really interested to have a direct experience of Sikhi and Simran on Shabad Guru, and have a living experince with our living Guru, Siri Guru Granth Sahib Ji.

Afternoon was sometimes Sikh History, or a lecture on the 5 Kakaars by Cherdi Kala Jetha, but it was a sharing session on

the experience of the 5 k’s rather than lecture bound. On one day Shanti Kaur and Dharamjot led a combined session on the Power of Prayer.  The participants chanted Shabad Hazare in the presence of Siri Guru Granth Sahib Ji for nearly 40 minutes and the participants were really chanting with their hearts and lungs!

Another highlight of this Camp that we never did before was nearly 2 hours of Simran.  Just pure simran chanting in Guru’s Darbar. One of the meditations was Mul Mantra and the participants and the Sangat chanted it for 62 minutes, and then there was a break for 15 minutes of silence and the third meditation was Guru Guru Whaheguru Guru Ram Das Guru for 11 minutes and everyone chanted loudly, but in a deep and inspiring tone. During the breaks of this morning Simran, silence was required, but we did not have to coax and tell anyone. Everyone, even the most rowdy participants, was silent.  In the whole campsite there was a silence and you could hear the birds and the sound of the wind. I can’t explain it to you, but the experince, feeling and inspiration of this camp was different and really powerful.

Jasbir Singh Scotland led a 2 hour workshop and it was highly interactive,informative and he effortlessly led the participants to have a self experience in sections of his workshop,whereby they had to do group actvity and go through a process of

learning. Cherdi Kala Jetha also led a workshop on Sant Sipahi of our times and Shanti taught a workshop on Facing our Fears. In short, they were Superb.  Gurutej Singh Khalsa, founder of Akal Security, one the the largest security companies in America, also came on the last 2 days of the camp and had a session called Straight Talk with Gurutej.  The discussion was honest, straight up and simple. The participants asked him qustions on how he lived with a turban and untied full beard in America and how he started and now built up the company with an inspiring team into a billion US dollar company. His answer was that he worked hard and meditated in the Amrit vela. He described how he is deeply inspired that we have a Living Guru in every way, Siri Guru Granth Sahib Ji.

Last but not least the night Kirtan and Sharing Sessions in the presence of Siri Guru Granth Sahib ji by Cherdi Kala Jetha, Shanti Kaur Khalsa, Gurutej Singh Khalsa, Siri Akal Jetha and Bhai Sahib Bhai Tejpal Singh Khalsa from Mata Kaulan Amritsar were mesmerizing. Stories of Gurus and Bhagats and Saints of God were just gold. Cherdi Kala Jetha is the best that I have heard them from all the years of coming here, and today they do not sing Gurbani Kirtan just in India and America, but everywhere in the world. To tie them down for a program is not that easy anymore! They are busy.

Shanti Kaur Khalsa shared about the mother of the Khalsa, Mata Sahib Kaur Ji.  Who she was,what was her experience and how she became Mother of the Khalsa. It moved many to tears. To have Shanti Kaur Khalsa at every Camp Miri Piri at least for the next few years is a must.  This is the request of the participants and Sangat of Camp Miri Piri! Gurutej Singh Khalsa’s session was also straight but poetic. He shared about his experience, how he became a Sikh and also about the Guru’s Warriors and Guru Hargobind Ji. Immaculate.

The team at Sikh Sewaks Singapore went through alot, worked hard, kept up and we would like to thank and are at the feet of Sangat here whom helped us, sponsored this Camp and never said no to any help we needed. Waheguru! We also like to thank Datuk Harjit and Family for allowing us and helping us in the venue. Last but not least Bhai Sahib Bhai Tejpal Singh and Jetha from Mata Kaulan whom visited us and inspired us in a session of moving Kirtan and Katha about the times of Guru Ram Das Ji. Akaal!

Jugat Guru Singh Khalsa, School Principal and the Cherdi Kalaa Jetha at the European Yoga Festival 2010

2010 Graduate, Bhagwati Kaur Mulfinger was in charge of the MPA booth. Turbans were sold to support our fundraising efforts, and she tied turbans on hundreds of people.  Harijot Singh Khalsa taught Gatka to all of the children, and Ongkar Singh Teske led the whole camp in a Kundalini Yoga class.  We are so grateful for their continued leadership and support of the school, and we hope that next year even more alumni will be able to join us!

Graduation 2010

We were honored to share one last special occasion with the Class of 2010.  Each came to Miri Piri Academy for their own reasons, and each graduated with a much better understanding of themselves. In the words of Guru Amrit Hari Kaur Khalsa, this years recipient of our annual Siri Singh Sahib Award for Excellence:

What is on the horizon for the Class of 2010?  That is mostly unknown.  They received acceptance letters to the following schools:

Devdharm Singh, Prabhujot Kaur and Guru Har Narayan Singh were also honored with Dean Scholarships from their schools of choice.

Some will go straight to school, and others will take a year off to travel, get their feet on the ground, spend some time at home with their families, and even return to MPA as a Sevadar to be there for the younger students.  Wherever they go we will be eagerly awaiting news of their successes and hoping that they will return to visit us and share their experiences with the next generation.  Jugat Guru Singh Khalsa, School Principal, said it this way:



• Our annual fundraising drive to support the MPA Financial Aid fund got off to a great start at Summer Solstice this year.  Thanks to the hard work of Arjan Kaur Khalsa, one of our newest parents, the Silent Auction was a great success and more than $10,000 was raised to support all the students who need financial assistance.  If you haven’t yet signed up, we encourage you to sign up for monthly donations of any level.  Every dollar is a valuable support to all of the beautiful children who want to grow in consciousness and spirit. Their education isn’t possible without your generous support!  You may also consider contacting Saraswati at for help organizing a fundraising drive in your community.
• Our first group of 10th and 12th grade students completed the Cambridge IGCSE and A-Level exams and are waiting eagerly for their scores to be released on August 12th, 2010.
• Parents and staff met at solstice to talk and share stories, ideas and solutions.  One of our favorite ideas that emerged was to share a group meditation that can be done by all the parents and friends of Miri Piri Academy to lend our positive energy and projection to the growth of the students and the school.  Look for a special meditation that you can do to support Miri Piri Academy in an upcoming newsletter!

The Law of the Universe

Obey, Serve, Love, Excel.  Yogi Harbhajan Singh Khalsa referred to that formula as the Law of the Universe.  As Shiv Charan Singh Khalsa explains it:

MPA Students in Daily Formation

“To obey is like following the call of the river to reach the ocean. Even when the power of the flow gets deeper and wider and is not so easy to stay with. To serve is to hold to our commitment no matter what circumstances we cross. No matter how strong the storm of fear or how great the doubt. To love is to deliver your whole and true self, letting the heart go through the pain of stretching wider to reach the discovery that there is nothing the Light of God within cannot hold and deal with. To Excel is to let that Light shine through into every single act you do.” If you can teach your child obedience and give them the experience of service, then love and excellence will follow.

Developing Obedience

There are countless books written on this subject, and countless approaches to discipline in parenting.  They boil down to the same thing:

1. Be a good example.  Live what you teach.
2. Be neutral.  If you are emotional, then your children will be commotional.
3. Be clear and simple. Rules like “Be kind,” “Be safe,” and “Listen the first time” can be applied to almost any situation.
4. Be consistent.  If you do not follow through on what you tell your children, then they will not learn to follow through on what you ask of them.
5. Expect obedience.  People tend to manifest what we expect of them.

The Service Experience

There are no words, no lesson plans, no curriculums that can impart the wisdom gained through personal experience.  Humility and love begin with service.  You can begin at home by:

1. Volunteering with your children at a local charity that provides service to those less fortunate.
2. Participating as a family in food preparation and service at your community gatherings.
3. Encouraging your children to be creative and follow their naturally altruistic inclinations.  If they state that they want to share with others, then create a sharing program at home where part of every grocery purchase is donated to the local food kitchen, or part of every allowance is set aside for charity.

Silver House Under Rain

Water drops falling from the sky, just another rainy day at Amritsar, India. Everyone is hiding beneath ceilings and umbrellas, closing stores, suspending activities, running back home and desperately trying to stay dry…everyone but MPA students.

What is so “dangerous” about the rain? Why do people always run away from it? After all, water is one of the most precious gifts of Mother Nature. We are lucky to get it, avoiding it just keeps us away from being part of the miracle. Yes it is true, your clothes may be wet, the hairdo or makeup could vanish and you could even get a small cold. All of those reasons are not enough to avoid the sensations of water running all over the body, the sight of all the plants and trees being watered by nature or the fun you can get without having to pay a cent.

One thing we have been taught here is the power within ourselves to turn things as we want them to be. Bad things can only become bad when we let them; it is just matter of perspective. We can take something, complain about all the negative effects of it while hiding from them, or we can take the same thing and think what we can do to make it useful and

pleasant. And by following this philosophy, Silver House was given one of the greatest times our squad has spent together this year.

Playing in the rain.

Everything wet, all full of mud, at any time you could just slip and fall right on the ground. What is the best thing to do about it? Run to the Kabadi field! There’s no better place to spend a quality rainy squad time than a whole field where everything that surrounds you is just a flat ground full of mud which, by the way, is designed as a wrestling space. Our Squad Leader, Akaljeet Kaur, took us to enjoy the rain to the maximum as we ran and fought under it.

“Her shirt is still clean!” that’s all we needed to hear to run after one of the girls and throw mud all over her. From our feet to the last end of our hair, every single girl of our squad finished covered in sludge. Wrestling, running, fighting and enjoying the gift of water was how we decided to have fun together. It is hard to put into words the experience and sensation of having done that, but I can say that it brought back the kid within us.

People who decided that rain was not good for them and preferred to stay away from it allowed the situation to affect their life. By using our mind to remake the situation according to our desires,  we opted to live in the moment and enjoy what we were given. We turned “a rainy day” into “our rainy day.” In the end, the sun shone upon us and a big rainbow arose to our delight.

What’s Happening at MPA

• Our first ever Cambridge Examinations have begun!!  After the first day Kirandeep Kaur reported: “Our first CIE have finally begun. The grade 10 students began their examinations with the Combined Science practical examinations and the History Paper 1 examination. One examination in the morning and the other in the afternoon.
  According to the students the Combined Science practical was easy in parts (Biology and Chemistry) and a little tough in Physics. However, they attempted the examination with confidence and complete composure. After the examination was over, they felt that they had scored “well”.   After this examination they sat with Arvind and revised for the History examination, taking a short break for lunch. The questions in the History examination were not tough and Arvind had covered most of the material in her classes and during the academic intensive.  Again the students, attempted the examination with skills, which are displayed by students who are used to taking such arduous examinations. The A/Cs are a boon in the examination classrooms as it is so much more comfortable for the students and they can concentrate on their examination instead of the heat.”
• Before leaving for home the students participated in demonstration classes using the three new Smart Board’s that will be employed next year:
• The first ever web-conference meeting between Kirandeep Kaur, Academic Principal and interested parents was held at the end of April.  Present were:  Gurumeher Singh, Guruprasad Kaur, Siri Daya Singh, Simran Kaur (parent and board member), Siri Shiva Singh, Guruhans Kaur, and Gurumustuk Singh.  Guru Meher Singh wrote “We all felt a lot of appreciation, and more in touch with what is happening for our kids at MPA. The notes reflect our desire to continue and build on this positive experience.”  We hope to make this kind of valuable collaboration a regular tradition!

Highlights from the Blog
